Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a movie based on book 5 of the Harry Potter series. The movie was released in 2007 and the DVD is not yet available.

Harry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixI’ve added a link to the book in case you are interested in reading it.

In the movie, we see that things at Hogwart’s school has been changing. The headmaster has been practically hiding and Harry Potter has been having nightmares.

The movie starts with Harry threatened by his cousin and they are both attacked by those scary creatures that guard Azkaban. Since he used magic to stop them from killing his undeserving cousin, he promptly receives a letter saying that he was expelled from school for using magic in front of a muggle.

He is rescued from his locked bedroom by his friends and he goes in front of a hearing to save himself from expulsion. We know something is wrong because it feels like a literal ‘witch hunt’.

The magic newspaper also shows us how someone is damaging Harry Potter’s reputation and to top it all off the magic authority is taking over Hogwart’s.

Harry learns more about his past and he learns to take on a leadership role. In the past he seemed to just go with the flow. He only needs a little encouragement to start teaching his classmates how to defend themselves from magic since they are no longer learning magic in class. Harry eventually takes on his nemisis Voldemort.

I really found this movie to be very exciting. There was plenty of action and effects. The plot was captivating and there were a few moments that were emotional. There were some of the funny moments we expect from Harry Potter movies. My favorite funny moment was when the ‘bad guys’ were trying to get in the secret chamber and the door shrank to tiny proportions as the ran up to it and hit the wall.

I give this movie a rating of 5/5

Finding Nemo

Collectors EditionNinding Nemo is one of my favorite Animated Movies because even though it is full of funny scenes, it actually teaches us cooperation, sharing, and dedication.

Finding Nemo is about Nemo’s life after he is captured by a scuba diver and put in a fish tank. His father, Marlin, goes in search of his son at great risk to his own life.

This movie is great for the entire family except for very young children who might find a few moments to be a little frightening unless they are used to watching Discovery channel.

Taxi

Taxi the movieTaxi is a very funny movie that got some very poor reviews. It is sad that it got poor reviews since it is so funny. Many people won’t watch it.

The movie is about Belle who had been an employee for a company that makes quick deliveries on bicycles. She had saved up her money, and finally got a car and license for having a taxi. She’s very excited about having her taxi and everything looks good. She has a strong, big, boyfriend and many good friends from her old job, so what could go wrong?

Well, on her first day of work she meets an idiot detective who decides to take her taxi to a crime scene, and forces her on a car chase which causes her taxi cab to be impounded and her out of work.

The idiot cop who wants to be a detective promises to get her taxi back if she’ll help him with the case. She doesn’t have a very good driving record, so she goes along with it. Everything goes downhill from there and the laughs keep on coming.

The plot is simple and somewhat predictable however I have watched it several times with friends and enjoy it every time whereas many other movies bore me after the second time. The movie stars Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon.

Saving Face

Saving Face is an excellent movie for teenagers and up. It was given an adult rating here in Mexico because the protagonist is a lesbian, but I have seen less offensive material in this movie than I have in many action movies with a lower rating, so we can attribute the adult rating to closed mindedness only.

In fact, it is a movie I’d recommend to anyone because it explores in a funny way the different issues that people and families often go through when someone ‘comes out of the closet’ and meets someone who he or she likes.

The movie isn’t just interesting in that way. On top of those issues, we also have cross cultural issues since the people in the story are Chinese immigrants and their children.

One of my favorite scenes is when the protagonist’s handsome black friend, yes friend, comes over for supper. He puts a lot of soy sauce on his food and the mother tells her in Chinese to not eat much herself or she’ll get spots.

Her mother loves her but doesn’t know what to do since in her Chinese culture a woman’s main role was to get married and have a family. She doesn’t understand why her daughter is a doctor and isn’t interested in the blind dates with Chinese immigrant men that she sets-up. Unfortunately, her mother has her own problems to deal with she needs a new husband, so her daughter sets her up on dates.

You don’t have to take my word for it. This movie won awards in the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival.

Flushed Away

Flushed Away coverFlushed Away is a funny movie which is perfect for children however the story might be too simple for some adults to enjoy more than once. If you have children, then this movie would be great for your collection.

Flushed Away is about a pampered rat or mouse, Roddy St. James (it isn’t very clear since they are humanized) whose house is invaded by a crude working class rat who starts dirtying his place. When he tries to trick the rat to go rest in the jacuzzi (toilet) to flush him, he gets pushed in, and flushed away himself where he discovers an underground London full of people like him plus a few frogs.

He makes friends in an attempt to get home and discovers that he was lonely. Oh yeah, he also discovers an evil plan, etc. :-)
