Saving Face

admin

Saving Face is an excellent movie for teenagers and up. It was given an adult rating here in Mexico because the protagonist is a lesbian, but I have seen less offensive material in this movie than I have in many action movies with a lower rating, so we can attribute the adult rating to closed mindedness only.

In fact, it is a movie I’d recommend to anyone because it explores in a funny way the different issues that people and families often go through when someone ‘comes out of the closet’ and meets someone who he or she likes.

The movie isn’t just interesting in that way. On top of those issues, we also have cross cultural issues since the people in the story are Chinese immigrants and their children.

One of my favorite scenes is when the protagonist’s handsome black friend, yes friend, comes over for supper. He puts a lot of soy sauce on his food and the mother tells her in Chinese to not eat much herself or she’ll get spots.

Her mother loves her but doesn’t know what to do since in her Chinese culture a woman’s main role was to get married and have a family. She doesn’t understand why her daughter is a doctor and isn’t interested in the blind dates with Chinese immigrant men that she sets-up. Unfortunately, her mother has her own problems to deal with she needs a new husband, so her daughter sets her up on dates.

You don’t have to take my word for it. This movie won awards in the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival.
